Lucie was rescued from a breeder in TN. in Oct. 2010. She came to us with 6 other Great Danes. She was 5 1/2 years old when we got her and is was obvious she had numerous litters. Lucie was adopted to a family in Victoria, but due to unfortunate circumstances, we got Lucie back in 2012. She was adopted again and this time it was her forever home. On Sept. 10th 2015 Lucie ran across that rainbow bridge to chase squirrels. Her owner said "She was the sweetest dog I have ever known. Thank you PAWS, for letting me love her so much!"

2/2014 - 2/2015

Kaiser, one of 12 puppies born in rescue 2/6/2004. Adopted out and lived a wonderful life in Leander with 6 other giant dogs. 180 lbs. of sweetness. When not on the couch, he served as a therapy pet for children. Kaiser passed over the rainbow bridge on 10/21/2011.

April 2008, Grant was rescued from the Austin shelter, after his
owner turned him in to be euthanized. He was in very bad shape and
barely able to stand up. Thanks to donations from many caring
people, Grant got the vet care and surgery he needed. Grant was
adopted by his foster mom who continued to provide him with the care
and treatments he needed. Grant's life was full of excitement and
love, until Dec. 26th, when he crossed the rainbow bridge.

Adopted 2003- PTS 06/2012 at age of 12

The Last Battle
For on this day, more than the rest, your
love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years, you wouldn't
want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me until
my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree it is a kindness
you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved, from
pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you who has to
decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, this year,
don't let your heart hold any tears.
-- Ziggy

Buddy was about 5 years old when he made it into
our rescue after surviving hurricane Katrina. He was adopted to a
wonderful family where he was living with 4 other Great Danes. Buddy had
5 wonderful years with his new family. Buddy passed away on Aug. 16,
2010.

Jasmine was rescued in 2003. She was in horrible shape. You could
see every bone in her body. At a year old she weighed only 50 Lb.
Sadly, Jasmine died at age 6 from Osteosarcoma. We take comfort in the
fact that Jasmine had five wonderful years with an owner who loved her
very much.
See before and after pictures.

In April 2005 Toby was at the Town Lake shelter.
Toby was HW+, so he was scheduled to be euthanized. Luckily, Toby was
rescued by PAWS and adopted by a great family who gave him a wonderful
loving home. Toby passed away Sept. 11th, 2008.
Blaire, Toby's mom said: "He was
our family, our best friend and the greatest company you could ask for.
I am crushed that we only got to be with him for 3 years. When we made
the commitment to be his forever home I knew it wouldn't be forever, but
I was willing if that could have been the case. Even though our time was
cut short, these last three years have been the greatest. I hope he
thought so too. I hope he knew that he was loved dearly. We have
wonderful memories. He always made everything that much better.... "

Many of you have read Hope's story. She was found on the
side of the highway after she was hit by a car and left for dead. Hope's
hind leg was partially torn off. Luckily, after four long days, someone
stopped to check on the dog and was surprised to see that she was still
alive. We were called to rescue Hope. We rushed her to the vet for
emergency surgery to remove the leg which was already rotting. In spite
of the severe blood loss, Hope pulled through surgery just fine.
After surgery Hope was sent to a foster home. Her foster family took
great care of her she learned to walk, even run with 3 legs. Hope was
feeling better and getting stronger. In 3 weeks she gained 15 Lb. She
was scheduled to be spayed and have a tumor mass removed from her
breast.
On Sept. 27th Hope went to the vet to be spayed and have the tumor
removed. Surgery went fine. Hope was in the recovery room waiting to be
picked up by her foster mom. At 4:00 p.m. as Hope's foster mom was
getting ready to take her home, she noticed that Hope was very cold and
very pale. She called the vet and Hope was rushed back to the surgery
table. She was still bleeding. Hope was hooked up to an IV and she got a
blood transfusion. She had 3 vets and 6 vet tech working on her. Hope
started coming around, but then crashed. Her heart stopped. The vet
cracked her ribs to do CPR. They brought Hope back once, but then she
crashed again, this time forever.
As you might imagine, this took a huge toll on all of us, the veterinary
staff, and especially, Hope's foster family. They are devastated, hurt,
angry and sad.
It was amazing to see this dog survive an accident, stay alive for 4
days on the side of the road without food or water. She was lucky to be
found alive. She made it to the vet and inspite of her severe blood
loss, she survived the complicated amputation surgery. She was making an
incredible recovery and winning the hearts of everyone who met her. She
was a trooper! And then it was her time to go.
We take comfort in the fact that we were able to give Hope 4 wonderful
weeks, where she was cared for and loved like never before. We consider
her to be lucky to know soft hands petting her, and knowing what it
means to be a pet. She was also able to see and say goodbye to her
foster mom right before she was taken to second surgery. Hope touched
many lives and those of you who helped us with donations for Hope
touched our lives.
Thank You!
We are still accepting donations in Hope's name. These donations will
help other dogs in need. You small contributions make a big difference
in these animal's lives. It allows us to do the work we do. Anything is
appreciated. We can't do this kind of rescue work and help animals
without your help and donations.

On 12/28/06 Annie, our 6 year old dane, passed away this morning at the clinic. She had kidney failure. She provided us with joy this past year and was the best dog ever. She was our very first rescue and we will forever have rescues....we are very sad, but waiting for the day when we see each other again.

Dana was my first foster and my first adoption. She came to me
abused, frightened, withdrawn, heartworm positive and with no voice. By
no voice I mean she never barked or made any sounds. She just coward and
was very much withdrawn. My guess was she had never experienced a loving
stroke, a kind hand, a gentle touch or soothing words. With alot of
patience and short walks late at night she and I would work on building
her confidence and trust. After some time of working her through her
fears in the calm of the night I worked with her overcoming those fears
in the light of day. She not only mastered overcoming all the bad deeds
done to her, she opened up her whole being and learned to trust and
love. She mastered her walks without a lead and found joy in the time
her and I spent alone on our walks. She learned to climbed the stairs
she feared, slept in her kennel which was where she felt safe and warm
and close to me because her kennel was in my bedroom. She was the last
one I gave a kiss to at night and the first kiss in the morning when we
woke to start our day. I knew she was on the path to healing when she
found her voice and began to bark to establish her presence. It was pure
joy to my ears. We learned she had a thyroid problem and was told she
would have to be on daily med's for the rest of her life. A small price
to pay I felt for the joy she brought to my life.
Sat. Oct. 7 Dana was
taken to the emergency vet clinic due to problems with her struggling to
breathe. I was told she was in heart failure, her liver was enlarged and
she would not survive for long, or even through the night. With a heavy
heart and much tears I had to let her go. While she was injected I
cradled her in my arms, said my goodbyes and held her for about 30
minutes after she passed. One long last lingering kiss, a gentle stroke,
and soft-spoken words through tears of pain was how I left her. She is
now in heaven with the other 3 Danes I have said goodbye to, two she
never met and with Duke who I just lost this Aug. Dana would have turned
4 on Oct.25. The damage to her heart was due to having contracted
heartworms. Although she was treated at the time of her rescue the
damage progressed and her heart could no longer sustain her. A simple
heartworm preventive by her previous owner would have prevented all that
she endured. They took from Dana what was not theirs to take...her life.
Dana's ability to move forward will help me to do the same. For now...I
grieve her passing through tears and sadness. She no longer carries the
pain...for now I will endure that for her. Goodnight sweet Dana...we will be
with one another in my dreams. Forever in my heart.

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our friend and
companion. Our great dane (Duke) went down @ 2:30 a.m. 8/21 and passed
away @ 6:00 a.m. 8/21. The speculative cause of death is a blood clot
that took his life. During the time of his passing those who loved him
most, his family, surrounded him. Our hearts are heavy with sadness at
his untimely death. He was a gentle and loving friend and companion.
Duke came to us as a foster dog but within no time we realized that he
had found his lifelong family and home with us, so we adopted him.
Someone's trash had become our treasure. For those of you who may one
day decide to expand your family, please consider those animals that are
in need of loving homes and are awaiting a second and sometimes last
chance at happiness. The rewards for both the animal and family are
immeasurable.
For now the tears flow freely and continuously as grief settles in and
the realization that my friend and companion are no longer with us. He
is greatly missed but will forever be remembered and cherished. Duke was
8 at the time of his death. He was with our family for 2 years. I'm most
grateful for the time I had with him and the friendship and love he
shared with our family. Let it be known that we are not ashamed to admit
the love and loss of our pets and the grief of losing such a gentle
soul. Our grief will pass with time but the love we have for our pets is
never-ending.

Sweet Abby was PTS today (8/25/2006) at 1:30 p.m.
Abby was brought to the shelter in Dec. 1998. She was only 6 months old.
For 6 years Abby was PAWS' mascot. She went to schools to teach kids
about animal care, she went to nursing home to share her love with the
elderly, she went to our adoption days to promote adoption. She was a
great spoke dog. She taught us how to be patient and how to share our
happiness. She brought us love and enriched our lives. At the age 6 1/2
Abby was retired. She spent the last 2 years of her life relaxing on the
couch and listening to music. 2 weeks ago Abby was diagnosed with bone
cancer. It was very progressive and the vet said that it's too advanced
to treat. Abby was in a lot of pain and had to be kept on strong meds.
Once Abby wasn't able to walk any more, it was time to say goodbye.
Abby will be greatly missed, but she is now with many good friends
waiting to meet again some day across the rainbow bridge.

Buck was rescued out of the shelter right before euthanasia. He was a
mess, but after he was cleaned up and groomed we discovered a gorgeous
dog with the most sweet gentle personality.
Buck was in rescue for almost 3 months, but right before Christmas Buck
went to his new home in Memphis, TN. Buck had wonderful 8 month with his
new family who loved him very much. On Aug. 28 Buck pass over the
Rainbow bridge due to cancer.
Buckley, we were fortunate to have met you.
Sept. 24th 2004 (day Buck was rescued) - Aug. 28th 2005

Lady Godiva, a 3-year-old black Great Dane was taken out of TLAC
couple of weeks ago. Godiva was a beautiful, most awesome, well tempered
and very loving dog. Although Lady Godiva had a wonderful personality
she was not in good health. Her previous owner did not spay her and she
had a huge mammary tumor. In addition, Godiva was Heartworm positive.
On Wed. May 18th we took Lady Godiva to our vet to be spay and have
the large mass of cancer tumor removed. Surgery was long and hard.
Godiva made it through the surgery, but she did not make it through the
night. Lady Godiva passed the rainbow bridge on Wed. May 18th at
11:53PM.
Lady Godiva was with us for a short time, but in that time she has
captured our hearts with her sweet loving personality. She will be
greatly missed.
As I am mourning the loss of Lady Godiva, I am trying to find comfort
in the fact that in the past 2 weeks she was loved and well taken care
of. At the same time I can't help but be very angry at Godiva's previous
owner who didn't bother to spay her, which would have prevented the
mammary cancer, or put her on Heartworm preventative. I am very angry
with this uncaring person. His/her negligence cost the life of this
wonderful pet.

Monty, aka Boss, came to PAWS in August of 2004. Monty's history was
very unfortunate. Monty and his mate Greta were used as back yard
breeding dogs and spent their life severely neglected. When they came to
PAWS both were emaciated and dehydrated. Monty and Greta were
immediately examined by our veterinarian and it was discovered that both
dogs also had an advanced case of heartworms.
Unfortunately, due to a critical medical condition, Greta was put to
sleep on September 22, 2004. Although our hearts were broken, Greta was
able to spend her last few weeks on this earth in a home where she was
able to experience love and attention for the first time in her life.
Monty, being in somewhat better shape, was adopted to a wonderful
family in San Marcos. Monty had the opportunity to experience a new life
with an outstanding family who loved and cared for him and made him a
part of their family. Monty was treated for the Heartworms, but
unfortunately the damage to his heart and lungs from living so long with
heartworms was too acute. Monty had a wonderful 8 months with his new
family, but on April 11, 2005 Monty passed away.
Monty has joined his mate, Greta, on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Our sweet, young Brady passed away on 9-16-2003 of an illness that we
are uncertain of. He had been sick for several weeks but appeared to be
recovering. He was very young, and so very sweet. He was a playful and
loving soul.
Even though he was very little, he never let his small size detour
him from making a grand stand. And grand he was, we will all miss him
terribly and pray that he is now in a safe and painless place where he
can feel love surrounding him at all times. We take comfort in knowing
that he is in heaven and that he will never suffer or be alone again.
We miss you Brady, and we will NEVER forget you little man.

Timmy's mother died while giving
birth. Because Timmy was denied his Mother's valuable colostrum, he soon
became sick and died. His foster family was with him when he passed and
they said God took him quickly. For some reason, Timmy waited for them
to check on him and passed away in their arms. At least we know he is in
a better place and walking around and feeling healthy. I bet there is
even a momma cow for him to nurse from.
